Step-by-step guide on repainting and kitchen cabinets and refinishing kitchen cupboards

1. Tools you need to paint kitchen cabinets

You will want to be prepared before starting painting kitchen cabinets. So here iare all the items and tools you need:

• Kitchen cabinet paint (see above for buying cabinet paint)
• Roller arm with small to medium size roller cover
• Flat painting brush
• Stir stick
• Masking tape (use high-quality tape that removes clean and creates sharp edges)
• Paint tray
• All-purpose cleaner/ detergent
• cloth
• P300 grid sandpaper and sanding pad

2. Preparation before painting kitchen cabinets

Before beginning, make sure there is no direct sunlight and wind to blow dust, and that temperatures are between 18 °C and 25 °C.

1. Empty the cupboard and remove any hardware like pulls, handles, and knobs from the cabinet.
2. Remove doors and drawers from the cupbobard frame and lay them flat on top of wooden stands or on the protected floor.
3. Sand every surface that will be painted with 300 grid sand paper or sanding pad. Follow the grain (if you are sanding wood cabinets).
4. Next, remove dust and clean with a detergent and a cloth to degrease . Sanding as well as cleaning is an important step and should be taken serious; after all it makes sure that the cabinet paint adheres properly.
5. After cleaning, wipe off with water to remove any residue. Let dry completely.
6. Fetch the masking tape and tape off all edges and areas that you don’t want painted. Also protect the surroundings from spills with sheet or cardboard.

3. Painting kitchen cabinets/ Repainting cabinets

After preparing and protecing, you are ready to paint:

1. Stir the paint in the bucket with a stir sick, pour a small amount in the paint tray. Get your brush ready.
2. Start painting edges and corners on the frame with the flat brush. Do the same with doors and drawers. Follow the wood grain (if you paint wood).
3. Grab the roller and continue rolling the paint on all the larger surfaces and fill in the rest.
4. As soon as the first layer of paint is dry to the touch, you can turn the doors and paint the backsides in the same manner.
5. In between layers or any painting brake, you should cover the paint tray and put brush and roller in plastic sacks to be able to reuse them.
6. After all has been given the first layer of paint and it is dry to the touch (approxemately 2 – 3 hours), repeat the painting process for the second coat.
7. Let dry overnight (or at least 8 hours) before reassambling. Check if the covering is nice and even, if not add a third layer of paint.
8. For an extra awesome finish, you can slightly sand the dried layer (P300 grid) in between layers of paint to make the result extra smooth.

4. Reassembling kitchen cabinet

1. Once the paint has dried, remove the masking tape.
2. Attatch hardware, reassamble doors and drawers.
